Mangaza Racing teammates share Zwartkops wins
Bester and Watt share the wins at Round 6
After two coastal events, the DOE Formula Vee partnered with CIM Lubricants drivers returned to Gauteng for the sixth round of their 2026 championship on 11 and 12 September. Mangaza Racing teammates, MD Bester (Mangaza Racing / First 4 Men Rhema 2) and Kyle Watt (Mangaza Racing / First 4 Men Rhema 2) shared the race wins around the 2.4km Zwartkops Raceway.
Watt set the quickest time across Friday's practice sessions, with teammates Peter Hills (Mangaza Racing / First 4 Men Rhema 2), Bester and Vaughn Hills (Mangaza Racing / First 4 Men Rhema 2) not far behind, but Bester took the honours in Saturday morning's qualifying session, edging Watt by 0.051 seconds, with Vaughn and Peter Hills on the second row. Championship leader Lendl Jansen (Bull Security Rhema 2) headed the third row of the grid alongside Shaun van der Linde (Truck City Boksburg Rhema 2). Theodore Vermaak (DOE Quality Parts / StartMyCar Forza) and double Aldo Scribante winner Jaco Schriks (Cubed Coatings Rhema 2) were seventh and eighth ahead of Association Championship rivals James Carter (Rhema 2) and Anton van der Merwe (VDM Orthotics & Prosthetics HR-1), who rounded out the top ten.
Bester grabbed the lead from the start of the first race, but he didn't have things all his own way. Watt was soon on his heels, and by the third lap, Watt was leading the way just ahead of Bester, with Jansen, Peter Hills, Vaughn Hills, van der Linde, Vermaak and Schriks in a high-speed train behind him. A lap later, Peter Hills got back past Jansen to regain third, and the leading trio slowly opened a gap on the rest of the pack. Mechanical problems spoilt Vaughn Hills' race, and he dropped down the field to eventually finish in eighth place, just ahead of the Association Championship battle between van der Merwe, Carter and Reynard van der Linde. Meanwhile, at the front of the field, the battle for the podium continued, with Bester coming out on top after ten hard-fought laps. Watt had to settle for second with Peter Hills in third; the leading trio covered by just less than four-tenths of a second. Behind them, Shaun van der Linde held off Vermaak to take fourth. Schriks was not far back in sixth ahead of Jansen in seventh.
The second race was a thriller, with a high-speed train of eight cars swapping positions almost every lap. Unfortunately, it didn't last. Bester, Peter Hils and Vermaak, who were running second, third and fourth, ended up stuck in the gravel trap on the outside of Turn 2 and the red flags came out to allow the marshals to remove the stricken cars.
The race was restarted, but only lasted a lap. Contact between van der Merwe and Reynard van der Linde saw the latter's car upside down on the tyre barrier at the entrance to Turn 2, and the red flags flew again.
When the two parts were added together, Watt took the win from Schriks, with Sahun van der Linde in third. Vaighn Hills ended up in fourth ahead of Jansen, with van der Merwe, the leading Association Championship contender, in sixth. Raynard van der Linde was classified seventh ahead of Barry Stuart (Basically Branding Forza), Helder Gouveia (Hidro Clean Maxima) and David Austin.
Watt took the overall win on the day ahead of Schriks and Shaun van der Linde, while van der Merwe took Association Championship honours from Raynard van der Linde and Barry Stuart.
The DOE Formula Vee, partnered with CIM Lubricants series heads to Red Star Raceway, just outside Delmas, for the penultimate round of the 2026 championship on 9 and 10 October.
