We will be making our way to the Freestate next weekend for round two of the Hankook National Formula Vee Championship. Warmly hosted by the amazing folks of The Extreme Festival at the Phakisa Freeway just outside of Welkom.
Some fantastic wheel to wheel action awaits. Don’t be surprised to see a different leader on every lap, or to see 2 or 3 cars side by side in the fast sweeps. This is one of the most competitive bunches ever, on a track that presents lots of slipstreaming opportunities in challenging sequences of fast straights and sweeps.
Lube Fusion’s Peter Hills will be hoping to feel welkom coming into the second round as the championship leader. His experience and finesse should be rewarded by the very technical 4.2km circuit. The lap record though belongs to Greg Wilson (Reflex Solutions) who proved to be right on pace thus far for 2016. Gert Van Den Berg too will be feeling very confident coming of an absolutely stellar drive in the last race. Truth is, anyone can take it.
The pace and competitiveness at the last race must have left a little disappointment here and there. Some guys had some bad luck, and for others the day simply didn’t go their way in such a tight field. Thus for them, Phakisa is their next chance to make amends, you can bet their efforts will be doubled. Jaco will be hoping to make up for a false start, Liam will want to capitalise better on his impressive qualifying performance, Lendl will be trying to keep it on the black stuff pointing the right way and Brandon will be trying to avoid Lendl. (Tip to Brandon: shin guards)
There will be lots of fun too, as traditionally Phakisa is one of the social highlights of the year with most of the competitors camping at the track. Its going to be tough, with such a social bunch and a 7am qualifying time.
See you all there!
